Glance Networks is an Arlington, Massachusetts-based software company. Glance Networks is most notable for Glance, an internet-based screen-sharing and webconferencing tool.

[edit] Overview

According to the company’s press kit[1], Glance was first launched in 2002. The program is subscription based, with prices available on the company’s web site. Customers are able to subscribe on a daily, monthly, or yearly basis [2]

Glance eschews most traditional marketing strategies in favor of netroots-style support from blogging and social networking communities, featuring presences on Facebook[3], Twitter[4] and similar sites.

[edit] Technology

Glance is designed as a web-based, cross-platform remote desktop application that utilizes several levels of redundancy to avoid disconnections. These are both physical and electronic; Glance's net traffic travels through two geographically distinct colocation centers, one in Massachusetts and another in California.[5]

The main technologies Glance utilizes are Java and ActiveX[6]; the program automatically chooses which protocol to use based on the needs and capabilities of the host system.

In addition to working within Windows and Linux environments, Glance has garnered much praise for its functionality with Mac OS-based systems[7]

In October 2008, Glance released a new version of their client. This version, Glance 2.4, allows the Glance account holder to either show their screen to others, as they had been able to do previously, or view their guest's screen. This additional mode essentially allows Glance to function as a remote support program, and has been promoted as such.[8]
