Giovanni Paolo Foscarini (fl. 1627–47) was an Italian guitarist, lutenist, theorist and composer. He was active in Rome, Venice, Brussels, and Paris. His Il primo, secondo e terzo libro is the earliest known engraved Italian guitar tablature. Foscarini issued numerous collections of music, frequently reprinting earlier material; his notation is sometimes incomplete, but the music encompasses the entire Italian guitar repertory of the period and was highly regarded during Foscarini's lifetime. In the preface to Il primo, secondo e terzo libro the composer discusses three playing styles: battute, pizzicato (which Foscarini deemed more appropriate to the lute) and a mixture of the two, which he employed frequently. This mixed style, which may have been invented by Foscarini, was adopted by later composers such as Angelo Michele Bartolotti and Francesco Corbetta.
