Prof. Dr. Ghulam Murtaza is a Pakistani plasma physicist, mathematician, professor, and a research scientist at the Government College University, Lahore. He is the Director of Center of Excellence for Solid State Physics at the Government College, Lahore from 2000 to 2006. He is an eminent educationist of Pakistan. He specialized in the theoretical physics, thermonuclear Fusion, Particle Physics & Solid State Physics. He also taught theoretical physics at the Government College Lahore. Ghulam Murtaza is also a distinguished student of Nobel laureate in Physics, dr. Abdus Salam (late).
[edit] Early Life and EducationMurtaza was born in Amritsar, British India, in 1939, where he received his elementary education from there. After the partition of India, Murtaza along with his family member migrated to newly founded nation, Pakistan. His family settled in lahore, where he completed his high school. In 1954, he was admitted to University of Punjab, lahore with a scholarship, majoring in experimental physics. In 1958, he received his B.Sc. in experimental physics from there. In 1960, Murtaza did his M. A. in Applied Mathematics from the Punjab Univeristy. The same year, he joined Government College, Lahore as an applied mathematics professor and lecturer. In 1963, he went to United Kingdom for further higher studies. He attended Imperial College London, majoring in applied physics. The same year, the world-renowned scientists such as Bertrand Russell,Albert Einstein, Julius Robert Oppenheimer, Abdus Salam, and Wolfgang Pauli to name a few, were teaching at the Imperial College London. In 1964, Murtaza continued to pursue his post-graduate work at there. While at the Imperial College, he met with dr. Abdus Salam, who was soon to be his mentor; his scientific theories and teaching heavily influenced him to pursue for a Ph.D in theoretical plasma physics. He, like his fellow associate and friend, dr. Riazuddin, maintained a close association with dr. Abdus Salam. In 1966, Ghulam Murtaza received his Ph.D in theoretical plasma physics under the supervision of dr. Abdus Salam; whereas, he also received a D.I.C degree in Science. [edit] Career in PAECDr. Ghulam Murtaza joined PAEC in 1960 as an experimental physicist. He also worked there as a Scientific Officer, later he was promoted to Senior Scientific Officer. However, in 1966, after his Ph. D, he was transferred to theoretical physics lab, where he along with his mentor, dr. Abdus Salam, closely worked and produced numerous scientific papers and journals about their experiments and theories in theoretical physics. In 1967, he was later put in charge of Plasma Physics lab where he also specialized in Plasma Physics. He had closely worked with known Pakistani nuclear physicist, dr. Shaukat Hameed Khan, where he and Khan produces numerous scientific papers and journals about their discoveries in Plasma Physics. He played an important role in setting up the Plasma physics lab at the PAEC. In 1969, dr. Murtaza left PAEC and joined Punjab University. [edit] Academic Career in Universities of PakistanIn 1962, after his M.Sc. in applied physics, Murtaza came back to Pakistan for a short time being and joined Government College, Lahore as a mathematician lecturar. In 1962, he resigned from his post and flew back to United Kingdom. In 1969, Murtaza joined newly founded research university, Quaid-i-Azam University, as an associate professor. In 1970, he became a distinguished professor of plasma physics at the Quaid-i-Azam University. In 1993, he was known as a Meritorious Professor at the Quaid-i-Azam University. In 1990, he became a head of Physics Department at the university. He kept his position till 1997, when a well-known young and authentic nuclear physicist, dr. Pervez Hoodbhoy was named to be the head of the Physics Department. In March, 1996, he was appointed as a Dean, Faculty of Natural Sciences at the Qaid-e-Azam University. In 2000, he moved to Lahore where he was appointed as a director of Center of Excellence for Solid State Physics, Lahore, which is also known as Dr. Abdus Salam Center in Solid-State Physics Lahore, also at the Government College. He kept his position till 2006. In 2006, he joined Government College Lahore as a Plasma Physicist to date. Dr. Ghulam Murtaza is a distinguished student of only Pakistani noble laureute dr. Abdus Salam. He is the recipient of high civil award "Sitara-e-Imtiaz" which was awarded to him by Prime Minister of Pakistan. In 1986, he was awarded a gold medal from Pakistan Academy of Sciences. In 1991, he was elected fellow of Pakistan Academy of Sciences. He is a keen researcher in the field of Plasma Physics/Controlled Thermonuclear Fusion, Elementary Particle Physics and Solid State Physics. In October, 2004, he was appointed director of Abdus Salam National Center for Mathematics (ASNCM). In 2003, he was awarded an Honorary degree of science from HEC Ph. D Studies Program and research institute. Recently, he joined Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) where he became in charge of Astronomy and Astrophysics Laboratory. He also represented SUPARCO at International Year of Astronomy. [edit] Awards and Fellowships
