[edit] History

The airline was established in 1997 as Eurowings Flug GmbH, and was renamed to Germanwings GmbH on 27 October 2002. The airline is the first low cost airline in Germany which offers connecting flights. This programme was founded in Autumn 2007 and is called Smart Connect.

On 29 January 2008, plans were announced to merge low-cost airline operations of Deutsche Lufthansa AG and TUI Travel PLC (Germanwings, Eurowings, TUIfly) into a joint and independent holding company.[3] These plans were scrapped in October 2008.

In December 2008, it was announced that Germanwings would be sold entirely to Lufthansa, effective 1 January 2009. [4]

On 7 December 2005, the airline signed an agreement to purchase 18 Airbus A319 aircraft (with a further 12 options). These are their first direct orders with Airbus, with deliveries from July 2006 until 2008. [6] During winter 2004–2005 Germanwings leased two Boeing 717 from Aerolíneas de Baleares to test this type, but no order was made after.
