Georgia Perimeter College is a two-year associate degree-granting unit of the University System of Georgia. GPC has multiple campus locations on the north and east side of metro Atlanta.

The institution was founded by the DeKalb County Board of Education as DeKalb College in 1958 and offered its first classes in Clarkston, Georgia in 1964. It was renamed for Atlanta's Perimeter highway in 1997 to indicate that it no longer served only DeKalb County.

[edit] Facts and figures

Georgia Perimeter College is the largest two-year college and the third-largest institution in the University System of Georgia. Despite of being the largest two-year college, the institution is considered by some to be the least selective of the USG member institutions in admitting students. Its spring 2004 enrollment was 20,266. In the Spring of 2007, enrollment had reached over 21,400 people.

On October 1, 2006, Anthony B. Tricoli assumed his position as President of GPC.

As of August 14, 2009, there are over 22,000 students registered, with a target goal of 25,000 students registered for fall semester, according to Anthony Tricoli.

[edit] Locations

  • Three in DeKalb County:[3]
    • Clarkston Campus (formerly known as "Central Campus"), in an unincorporated area south of Clarkston, is the original campus.
    • Decatur Campus (formerly known as "South Campus"), in an unincorporated area south of Decatur
    • Dunwoody Campus (formerly known as "North Campus"), City of Dunwoody[4]
  • Newton County: Newton Campus, in an unincorporated area
  • City of Alpharetta in Fulton County: Alpharetta Center at GSU

The newest campus is in unincorporated Newton County, east of the city of Covington, and opened in January 2007. In addition, distance learning courses via the Internet and videotaped course-ware are also available.

The Lawrenceville campus at the Gwinnett University Center closed to all students who are not getting a degree in Nursing in May 2008 when the Center became Georgia Gwinnett College.

[edit] Literary magazine

The Chattahoochee Review is the nationally recognized literary magazine published by the college. Teresa Weaver of Atlanta Magazine described it as a "fine literary journal".[5]
