Georges Leekens (born May 18, 1949) is the football manager for Belgian club KV Kortrijk, and a former football player.

[edit] Coaching career

He used to coach the Belgium national football team and led it to the 1998 FIFA World Cup finals after a two-legged win against the Republic of Ireland in the qualifying playoff. Leekens was selected as national coach after an impressive work at R.E. Mouscron that was playing the title in their first year in Jupiler League at the half of the season. He was sacked from his role as federal coach after a disappointing 3rd place in the World Cup group stage. On 4 May 2009 the Al-Hilal officials have sacked the Belgian coach. Abdullatif Al Hussaini was named as the team's caretaker until another Belgian coach Eric Gerets was hired in June 2009. On 29 May 2009 has signed a three year deal with K.V. Kortrijk and will replace current coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck in the summer, the 60 year old left Lokeren two months ago for a brief experience in Saudi Arabia with Al-Hilal.

[edit] Privates

Georges Leekens is the cousin of Louis Leekens, Louis was Belgian National Champion of gymnastics in 1966 and is currently leading the top sports school for gymnastics in Genk.
