George Alexander (September 21, 1839 – August 2, 1923) was a two term Mayor of Los Angeles, California. [edit] BiographyBorn in Glasgow, Scotland, he moved with his parents to the United States at the age of 11. In 1862, he married Annie Yeiser in Iowa. He later enlisted in the Iowa volunteers and fought in the Civil War. After the war, Alexander settled in Belle Plaine, Iowa, and in 1870 started his own grain and feed business. Alexander moved to Los Angeles, California, in 1887, and expanded his grain business. By 1892, he began his governmental career in the County Recorder's office. In 1901, he was elected to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and served until 1909.[1] In 1909 he ran in a recall election against Mayor Arthur C. Harper, and became Mayor of Los Angeles in 1909 and served until 1913. George Alexander died at age 83, and is interred in Angelus-Rosedale Cemetery, Los Angeles.[2] [edit] References
