Genbukan (玄武館?) is a school for traditional Japanese martial arts (Kobudo古武道 / Koryu Bujutsu古流武術). It was founded in 1984 by its present head and Grandmaster, Tanemura Shoto Sensei. The name Genbukan means 'the place that nurtures the professional martial artist'. The term Genbukan World Ninpo Bugei Federation, its abbreviation GWNBF and Genbukan can be used interchangeable.

The GWNBF is an international organization in scope with over a hundred Dojos in various countries. Tanemura Soke is also the head and founder of another three organizations that operate under the auspices of Genbukan headquarters (Honbu) in Japan:

a) Kokusai Jujutsu Renmei (KJJR) was founded in 1991 with the purpose of transmitting and preserving the authentic Japanese Jujutsu, but also for the study and teaching of some Chinese martial arts that are related to Jujutsu.

b) Japan Kobudo / Koryu World Federation (JKWF) were founded in 2004 to ensure the preservation and individual teaching of authentic ancient Japanese martial schools and styles (Ryu / Ha).

c) Amatsu Tatara World Federation (ATWF) was founded in 2006 with the purpose of transmitting spirituality and the source of Japanese martial arts and religious sciences.

[edit] Structure

The Genbukan Ninpo Bugei (玄武館忍法武芸) is divided in 36 categories called the "Ninja Sanjurokkei" focusing on taijutsu, bōjutsu, bikenjutsu and, equally important, Seishinteki Kyoyo, or spiritual refinement. Other topics of study include but are not limited to yumi, naginata, yari, jutte, kusari-gama, shuriken etc. In the Genbukan great importance is placed on Rei Ho, training through etiquette, greetings and proper manners as been the custome in ancient times.

Genbukan Ninpo taijutsu consists mainly of dakentaijutsu, jutaijutsu, koppojutsu, kosshijutsu, and taihenjutsu. Daken-Taijutsu specializes in striking techniques including blocks, punches and kicks etc. Jutai-Jutsu focuses mainly on throwing techniques, joint manipulation, locks and chokes. Kosshi and Koppo Jutsu are specialized techniques dealing with nerve or pressure point attacks and bone breaking, among other things. Taihen-Jutsu deals with body movement and body placement enabling one to effectively null or avoid an attacker's motions completely.

[edit] Rank

The ranking system for Genbukan Ninpo Taijutsu, KJJR, Koryu Karate and Goshin-Jutsu (subsystems within GWNBF and KJJR) is from the 10th Kyu level (also known as Mu-Kyu) until 1st Kyu level, and then from 1st Dan (rank), until the 10th Dan (rank).

Educational programs for weapons are separate, and the ranking depends on the weapons and are ranged from traditional way of licensing (Menkyo) to the modern way by Kyu and Dan rank system. Ranking in the original schools is carried out in a traditional manner, which varies for each style (Menkyo system).
