Gasquet - pronounced (GAS-kee), and formerly spelled Guasquet - is an unincorporated community 22 mi (35 km) southwest of the Oregon border in Del Norte County, California, and 18 miles (29 km) northeast of Crescent City, with a population of 515. It lies at an elevation of 381 feet (116 m). The ZIP Code is 95543.[2] Its area code is 707. Gasquet is located in the Smith River National Recreation Area and is reputed to be the rainiest place in California with an average annual rainfall of 90 inches[3]. A post office operated at Gasquet from 1879 to 1902 and from 1949 to present.[4] The name is in honor of Horace Gasquet, its first postmaster.[4]
[edit] PoliticsIn the state legislature Gasquet is located in the 4th Senate District, represented by Republican Sam Aanestad, and in the 1st Assembly District, represented by Democrat Wesley Chesbro. Federally, Gasquet is located in California's 1st congressional district, which has a Cook PVI of D +10[5] and is represented by Democrat Mike Thompson. [edit] Noted people from GasquetCanadian Football League quarterback Buck Pierce was born in Gasquet, and went to school in nearby Crescent City. As of 2008 he is the starting quarterback for the BC Lions. Pioneer woman Mary Adams Peacock carried the U.S. Mail from Crescent City to Grants Pass in the 1880s and 1890s.[6] When the Mary Adams Peacock Bridge was completed across the Smith River on Highway 199 near Gasquet it was the first bridge in the state to be named for a woman.[7] [edit] References
