Gary Lawrence Brackett (born May 23, 1980 in Glassboro, New Jersey) is a middle linebacker for the Indianapolis Colts of the NFL. Brackett was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Colts out of Rutgers University. After starting at Glassboro High School in Glassboro, New Jersey, he walked on to the Rutgers University football team.[1] By his senior year, he was captain of the defensive team and won the team's defensive MVP honors. During a 16-month span, starting in 2003, Brackett lost his mother, father, and brother. He began the IMPACT foundation in honor of his brother, a foundation to provide opportunities and resources to children afflicted with cancer.
[edit] High School YearsBrackett attended Glassboro High School in Glassboro, New Jersey and was a student and a letterman in football. In football, he was a two-time All-South Jersey selection, a two-time All-Group I choice, and a two-time All-Tri-County Conference choice. [edit] NFL careerBrackett was signed by the Colts in 2003 and became a starter for the team in the 2005 season. That year he had 131 tackles and 3 interceptions. In 2006 he had 123 tackles. For his career, he has had 528 tackles 2.5 sacks and 14 interceptions. Brackett was AFC Defensive Player of the Week on September 11, 2005 after having 9 tackles and 2 interceptions against the Baltimore Ravens. In fall of 2006, Brackett was named captain of the Colts defense. In the 2008 season, Brackett had a fumble returned for a touchdown in a comeback win over the Houston Texans. [edit] Humanitarian AwardOn August 18, 2009, Pro Football Weekly announced that Indianapolis Colts linebacker Gary Brackett was the 11th annual recipient of the Arthur S. Arkush Humanitarian Award. The award is presented to an NFL player “whose contributions to the community and charitable organizations are especially outstanding.” Brackett won the Humanitarian Award for his work with the IMPACT Foundation, a charity he founded in the spring of 2007. The IMPACT Foundation provides children affected by cancer with unique opportunities and resources they might not otherwise receive. Brackett has helped raise money through various programs including charity flag football games, an annual awards gala and Gary’s Locker, one of the foundation’s signature programs that provides children in area hospital with books, computers and other forms of entertainment to help occupy their time while in the hospital. In addition to various awards from around the community, Brackett was named the Colts Man of the Year in 2008. [edit] References
