[edit] Professional career

[edit] Minor Leagues

He was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 14th round of the 1999 Major League Baseball Draft, but was released after three seasons in the Braves' minor league system. He signed with the Minnesota Twins on May 24, 2002.[1]

From 2005-2008, he played for the Rochester Red Wings, the Twins' AAA affiliate. Jones made his major league debut against Cleveland on May 15, 2007, recording his first hit, a single off Paul Byrd in the seventh inning.[2]

[edit] 2009

After not being given an opportunity to play in the Majors by the Twins organization, Jones became a free agent at the end of the 2008 season and signed a minor league contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He earned an invitation to Spring Training with the Pirates, but, despite his impressive performance, did not make the Pirates' roster.

On June 30, his contract was bought by the Pirates, and he was called up to take the roster spot that was vacated when Eric Hinske was traded to the New York Yankees.[3] After being called up to the Pirates MLB roster, Jones hit ten home runs in his first twenty-one games with the club and was named the National League's Rookie of the Month for July 2009.[4]
