The Global U8 Consortium or GU8 is an educational consortium of eight leading universities located in coastal, maritime and seaport cities in Australia, China, France, Israel, South Korea, UK and USA. In 2008, Dr. Robert Carothers, the President of the University of Rhode Island, was elected the consortium's Chair of the Council of Presidents.

[edit] About the GU8[edit] HistoryThe Global U8 Consortium (GU8) was proposed by Dr. Seoung-Yong Hong, the President of INHA University, to address the challenges of establishing a "globally-recognised" university curriculum, in response to the rapid onset of globalisation in the late 20th century.[1] In 2005, Dr. Hong approached a select group of leading universities, which also shared the common geography of INHA in being located within a coastal city of their respective home countries. In early 2006, the Presidents of eight leading "coastal" universities; from Australia (RMIT University), China (Xiamen University), France (University of Le Havre), Israel (University of Haifa), South Korea (INHA University), UK (University of Hull) and USA (University of Rhode Island, University of Washington), signed the foundation "Memorandum of Understanding" in Incheon, South Korea and officially established the Global U8 Consortium.[1] Dr. Hong was installed as the consortium's founding Chair of the Council of Presidents, serving in the position till 2008 after which Dr. Robert Carothers, the President of the University of Rhode Island, was then elected.[2] [edit] ObjectivesGU8 universities collaborate on three main objectives:[1]
