Friuli Venezia Giulia Airport (IATA: TRS, ICAO: LIPQ), also known as Trieste Airport or Ronchi dei Legionari Airport, is an airport located in (0.3 NM (0.56 km; 0.35 mi) west[1] Ronchi dei Legionari (Gorizia), near Trieste, the capital and largest city of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, in north-eastern Italy. In 2007 it was renamed Friuli Venezia Giulia "Pietro Savorgnan di Brazzà" Airport, in honor of the 19th-Century humanitarian explorer of Africa known in English and French as Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza. This airport has a catchment area of approximately 5 million people, stretching beyond Friuli-Venezia Giulia into Slovenia and Croatia. The airport is equipped to handle all major aircraft and in recent years has witnessed an increase in cargo aircraft. In 2008, Friuli Venezia Giulia Airport handled almost 1.1 million passengers.
[edit] HistoryThe first official documents citing the airfield of Ronchi dei Legionari date back to November 30 1935, when the 4th Fighter Wing of the Royal Italian Air Force was based here. Commercial operations officially began on 2 December 1961. [edit] Getting thereThe airport is just 1 km (0.62 mi) off the A4 Trieste-Venice motorway (Redipuglia exit). Long and short-stay car parks are available. Monfalcone Railway Station - located some 5 km (3.1 mi) from the airport on the Trieste-Venice railway line - can be reached by Local Transport service APT Bus 10, running every 20/25 minutes. Tickets can be purchased at city bus/coach stations or at the airport: in the Arrivals Hall, with an automatic machine for selfticketing and at the Post Office. At the Trieste Coach Station, bus and coach connections to Slovenia (Izola, Koper, Ljubljana, Piran, Portorož, Postojna, Sežana) and Croatia (Dubrovnik, Porec, Pula, Opatija, Rijeka, Rovinj, Split, Zadar) are available.
