True freshwater sharks are cartilaginous fish able to live in freshwater lakes and rivers. They include:

• the Bull Shark (Carcharhinus leucas), which frequently swims up tropical rivers around the world
• the river sharks (Glyphis), which are only found in freshwater and are limited to tropical Asia
