The Championnat de France de football féminin, primarily referred to as the Division 1 Féminine, is a French football league for association women's football clubs in France. It is the female equivalent to the men's Ligue 1 and is contested by 12 clubs. The league operates on a system of promotion and relegation with lower leagues and is governed by the French Football Federation, who resurrected the women's league in 1974. Between 1918 and 1932, a similar competition was run by FSFSF. Olympique Lyonnais are the defending champions.
[edit] CompetitionThe league is composed by 12 teams that play with each other once at home, once away. Points classification are the same as lower men's league in France whereby four point are awarded for a victory, two points for a draw, and one point following a defeat. If a club forfeits a match or is penalized for committing an illegal act, such as using an ineligible player, then no points are awarded. At the end of the 22 matches, the top four battle it out in a playoff, the winner of which is named as the champion. The bottom two clubs are relegated to Division 2 Féminine, the second division of women's football in France, and are replaced by two clubs from D2. The winner of the league qualifies directly to the Round of 32 of the UEFA Women's Champions League, while the runner-up to the champions are inserted into the qualifying round.
