The Frankston Football Club is an Australian rules football club based in Frankston, Victoria and currently playing in the Victorian Football League. The club was formed in 1887. The Dolphins have no alignments to any AFL clubs.^[1]

[edit] Peninsula Football Association

Frankston was a founding member of the Peninsula Football Association in 1908. It lost the first Grand Final to Hastings. Frankston were Premiers in 1911, 1919, 1922, 1923, and 1931.^[2]

[edit] Mornington Peninsula Football League

At the end of the 1933 season the Peninsula Football Association merged with the Peninsula District Football Association to form the Mornington Peninsula Football League. Frankston were MPFL Premiers in 1937, 1938, 1939, 1941, 1949, 1952 and 1961.^[3]

Frankston entered the VFA in 1966, it played in 2nd division until it won the 1978 2nd division flag. Promoted into 1st division the Dolphins lost the 1984 Grand Final and later lost back-to-back flags in 1996 and 1997.

[edit] Grandstand Fire

On the morning of February 13th 2008 the Frankston Football Club's historic grandstand, named after stalwart Bryan Mace,^[4] was destroyed by fire. This grandstand had been there since the early 1930's and was an icon of the local community. It was originally built for the parade grounds of Australia's first World Scout Jamboree. Damage is estimated at over $1million.

Frankston appointed former North Melbourne forward Shannon Grant as its coach for 2009. Grant replaces former Melbourne defender Brett Lovett, who spent six years as coach of the Dolphins. Grant, 31, has signed as non-playing coach for two seasons after retiring from the AFL in 2008 with 301 games to his credit.

Frankston operations manager Bryan Mace said Grant would be a handy addition to the club.

“We’re very pleased to think that a fellow with such experience at AFL level has seen fit to start his coaching career at Frankston Football Club,” Mace said.

They have won three games this year, and have finished 12th on the ladder out of 13 teams. This is a heavy fallout from the 2008 season in which they finished 7th with 10 wins and 10 losses.
