Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is one of two primary methods of hair-transplantation currently offered; the other is the older and more invasive strip-harvesting (often cited as "F.U.T."). While F.U.E. is newer and less invasive than F.U.T., it is typically twice the cost, as well. Additionally, it is reasoned that F.U.E. has a lower ultimate yield of follicular units than F.U.T., making it unfavorable for patients who require extensive work however it is also reasoned that the skill of the surgeon is a major factor in the ultimate yield of the follicular units and that a skilled surgeon can get the same yield as one would get in a F.U.T. procedure. Though it is often claimed that F.U.E leaves no scars while F.U.T. leaves a thin scar in the donor area, F.U.E. does indeed cause scarring, though it is of a "pit" (circular) nature rather than a linear one and is often hard to detect when the extraction is done by a skilled surgeon unlike a F.U.T. procedure where one can not wear the hair very short without the strip scar becoming visible.
