The Sitges Film Festival (Catalan: Festival Internacional de Cinema Fantàstic de Catalunya) is a Spanish film festival that is one of the most recognizable held in Europe and considered the world's first and best international festival specializing in fantasy and horror movies. Founded in 1967, the festival normally takes place every year in early October in the Catalonian coastal town of Sitges, located about 40 kilometers (24.9 miles) south of Barcelona, Catalonia's Capital.

The Eclipse won the Melies D'Argent Award for Best European Motion Picture at the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival in 2009.[1]

Since 1971 the festival has given awards to the best films, actors, and film-makers.

The "Maria" award winners are the main awards of the festival and are chosen by an international jury. Currently, they are:

  • Best Cinematography
  • Best Original Score
  • Best Short Film
  • Best Makeup Effects
  • Best Production Design

The festival also presents:

  • The Infinia Award for Best Special Effects

  • The Carnet Jove Jury Award
  • An Award for the Best New Director
  • The "Gertie" Awards for Best Animated Short and Feature Film.
  • The Grand Audience Award (Gran Premi del Públic), which is awarded according to the votes of the festival's spectators.
  • The Midnight X-Treme Award, which is given to the best motion picture from the special screenings (and is chosen by the Carnet Jove Jury).
