The British Academy is the United Kingdom's national academy for the humanities and the social sciences. It was established by Royal Charter in 1902, and is a fellowship of more than 800 scholars. The Academy is self-governing and independent. As of June 2007, over 90% of the funds that the Academy administers are received as a grant from the Office of Science and Innovation (OSI), part of the UK's Department of Universities, Innovation and Skills. The Academy states its objectives as follows:
