Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour was an American ice cream parlor chain based in Portland, Oregon. The restaurant chain was founded in 1963 by Bob Farrell[1] and Ken McCarthy. Farrell's was known for their offer to children of a free sundae on their birthday. In 1972, it was purchased by the Marriott Corporation.[2] By 1975, there were 120 Farrell's nationwide. Thereafter, sales dropped and most of the parlors were sold off in the 1980s. In 1982, Marriott sold the chain to a group of private investors.[2] In 1983, the Selective Service purchased Farrell's "Birthday Club" and mailed warnings to young men to register before their 18th birthday. Farrell's blamed the situation on an unauthorized sale by a list broker and the government announced they would stop using the list.[3] The original location in Portland closed in 2001.[2]

Today, the only Farrell's in the mainland U.S. are in the Mountasia Family Fun Center in Santa Clarita, California and in The Shops at Mission Viejo mall in Mission Viejo, California. Two Farrell's are open in Kaneohe and Aiea, Hawaii. However, on November 18, 2009, Bob Farrell announced that the original location on 21st & West Burnside in Portland, Oregon would soon re-open, exact date is unknown at this time.[4]
