F.C. Brussels is a Belgian football club based in the municipality of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, Brussels playing in the Belgian Second Division. The club was formed in 2003 by the merger of R.W.D. Molenbeek and K.F.C. Strombeek. Although by using Strombeek's matricule n°1936, it lost Molenbeek's honours, the rest of the club was in fact composed of the remainders of the RWDM.

[edit] History

F.C. Strombeek first registered for the Belgian Football Association in 1932. It won the third division in 2000 and finished 10th in the second division the next year. In 2002 and 2003 Strombeek finished in 9th place. The club then merged with the RWDM that had just been refused its license for the first division. The new club won the second division that season under the coaching of Harm van Veldhoven but the manager was eventually fired in the summer. The new coach Emilio Ferrera made a bad start with the team at the highest level and was replaced by former Belgium manager Robert Waseige. Although Waseige managed to prevent Brussels' relegation (the team finished 15th) he subsequently resigned. The chairman Johan Vermeersch then hired Frenchman Albert Cartier for the 2005-06 season.

At the end of a disastrous 2007-08 season, Brussels found itself far adrift at the bottom of the table, 8 points behind St Truiden with whom they were relegated to the second division.
