The Executive Council of Newfoundland and Labrador (informally and more commonly, the Cabinet of Newfoundland and Labrador) is the cabinet of that Canadian province. Almost always made up of members of the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly, the Cabinet is similar in structure and role to the Cabinet of Canada while being smaller in size. As federal and provincial responsibilities differ there are a number of different portfolios between the federal and provincial governments. The Lieutenant-Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, as representative of the Queen in Right of Newfoundland and Labrador, heads the council, and is referred to as the Governor-in-Council. Other members of the Cabinet, who advise, or minister, the vice-regal, are selected by the Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador and appointed by the Lieutenant-Governor. Most cabinet ministers are the head of a ministry, but this is not always the case. As at the federal level the most important Cabinet post after that of the leader is Minister of Finance. Today the next most powerful position is certainly the health portfolio which has a vast budget and is of central political import. Other powerful porfolios include Education and Energy. [edit] Current CabinetThe current cabinet has been in place since soon after the 2003 provincial election. The cabinet is derived from the caucus of the Progressive Conservative Party of Newfoundland and Labrador. There was a cabinet shuffle on October 1, 2004, several days after Elizabeth Marshall announced her resignation as Health Minister. There was another cabinet shuffle on November 8, 2005, there was another cabinet shuffle as well on March 15, 2006. Another cabinet shuffle occurred on July 5, 2006. Then another Cabinet change was when Joan Burke was moved from Minister of Education, to Minister of Child, Youth, and Family Services. On April 9, 2009. Another Cabinet change was when Ross Wiseman, was moved from Minister of Health and Community Services, to Minister of Business. Another Cabinet change was on September 24, 2009, when Trevor Taylor resigned from his Cabinet post as Minister of Transportation and Works. The newest Cabinet change was on October 4, 2009, when Paul Oram resigned from his Cabinet post as Minister of Health and Community Services, which caused a number of Cabinet changes.
