Action potentials play multiple roles in several types of excitable cells such as neurons, myocytes, and electrocytes. Neurons, as well as various types of muscle cells change their membrane potential on stimulation in an explosive and reversible manner and generate action potentials because of their excitable membranes. Cells generating action potentials on stimulation are called excitable cells.^[1]
