EuropaCorp is a French movie studio. Co-founded by Luc Besson and Pierre-Ange Le Pogam, the Group combines the activities of production, cinema distribution in France, distribution on DVD and VOD, French TV rights sales, international sales, partnerships, licensing & by-products, music production and publishing, book publishing, and advertisement production. EuropaCorp is a public limited company with a Board of Directors and which registered capital is of 6,905,681.52 Euros; the company’s headquarters are located in Paris, France. EuropaCorp has been a listed company on Euronext Paris since 2007. [edit] Company's organization[edit] FoundationLuc Besson and Pierre-Ange Le Pogam worked together for the first time in 1985, on the movie Subway, directed by Luc Besson. Pierre-Ange le Pogam was then Distribution Director at Gaumont. Subsequently, virtually all the films that Luc Besson made with Gaumont between 1985 and 1999 topped the three-million ticket mark at the box office (e.g. The Big Blue, Nikita, Léon, The Fifth Element and Joan of Arc). Meanwhile, Pierre-Ange Le Pogam developed innovative promotional techniques at Gaumont which he applied for the first time in Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element. This film is France’s biggest export success of all time. In 1997 Pierre-Ange Le Pogam became Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Gaumont. In September 2000 the two friends created EuropaCorp. In July 2007, EuropaCorp successfully managed its IPO on Euronext Paris. The calls were three times higher than the puts. The IPO thus significantly assessed EuropaCorp’s determination to develop and grow. [edit] StructureToday EuropaCorp is owned at 62% by Luc Besson through its company Frontline and at 8.06% by Pierre-Ange Le Pogam. Frontline also owns the postproduction company Digital Factory.[1]. The sound editing is being carried out in Normandy while the image editing is being carried out in Paris. EuropaCorp’s Board of Directors includes 9 members; Luc Besson is the Chairman of the Board. Pierre-Ange Le Pogam is a member of the Board; he is also the Head of Development and a Producer. Jean-Julien Baronnet has been the Chief Executive Officer of EuropaCorp since November 2008. [edit] ActivityWith the objective of producing 10 to 15 movies a year, EuropaCorp is the biggest movie studio in Europe. [edit] French TV Rights SalesEuropaCorp ensures TV sales in the initial stages of a film’s development, by contacting French TV channels. These sales account for a significant part of pre-financing. [edit] Cinema Distribution in FranceEuropaCorp Distribution distributes in French theaters movies produced or acquired by EuropaCorp. Since the creation of the Group, EuropaCorp’s releases boasted on average approximately 1 million French admissions per film. [edit] DVD and VOD Distribution in FranceEuropaCorp Diffusion (publishing and distribution of DVD and VOD in France) and Ydéo (Marketing agency), two subsidiaries of EuropaCorp, conceive and market the DVDs from the movies produced or acquired by EuropaCorp. By initiating their work while the film is being shot, EuropaCorp Diffusion guarantees a high quality of content. EuropaCorp also signed a partnership with Fox and Pathé for the distribution of its movies. The Economic Interest Group or consortium Fox Pathé Europa is one of France’s leading distributors. [edit] International SalesThe international market is the leading source of income for the company’s films. EuropaCorp handles the pre-sales of rights to over 40 overseas countries and work with more than 162 international distributors. [edit] PartnershipsThe Partnership department establishes agreements with multinationals concerning EuropaCorp’s productions to generate additional sources of income while establishing innovative projets with strong brands and improving both communications and broadcasting of EuropaCorp’s movies. Among the brands EuropaCorp associated with are Audi, Dassault Systemes, the bank BNP Paribas and Ubisoft, when working on the trilogy Arthur and the Invisibles. [edit] Licensing an By-ProductsThe License department deals with the exploitation of by-product rights from the movies produced by the Group. This represents a significant source of revenue and an efficient promotional technique, especially in the case of animated pictures. Arthur and the Invisibles is a reference in terms of effectiveness of licenses in the movie industry, with more than six hundreds different by-products, and partnerships with well-known brands such as McDonald's, Lansay, Panini, or Atari. [edit] Music Production and PublishingEuropaCorp produces or coproduces its own motion pictures soundtracks and then markets them via distributors. EuropaCorp Music Publishing manages the publishing rights for the exploitation of this large library of tracks with other external projects. EuropaCorp thus collaborated with famous artists such as the French singer -M- for Tell No One, Massive Attack for Unleashed or Éric Serra for Arthur and the Invisibles. [edit] Catalogue ManagementRoissy Films, a subsidiary of EuropaCorp, manages and optimizes the complementary exploitation of a large library of films with more than 500 titles. This complementary exploitation comes after the “first life” or first running of a movie, i.e. after its first distribution in movie theaters, on DVD and VOD and its third broadcast on a TV channel. [edit] Books and comics publishingIntervista and Septième Choc are the two publishing subsidiaries of EuropaCorp. They published several collections centered on the cinema industry and the world of films. Other publications have initiated film productions, such as the Arthur series published by Intervista and others may soon become feature film projects. [edit] Advertisement ProductionDog Production, a subsidiary of the Group EuropaCorp, produces and develops advertisements and other specialty commissioned films for well know branded companies such as Dior, Chanel, Orange, Alice Telecom or Audi… [edit] Comics' adaptation right salesEuropaCorp and Glénat, first European independent publisher of comic books, formed a partnership in October 2008 to create EuropaGlénat. [edit] Other ActivitiesEuropaCorp Japan, a subsidiary of EuropaCorp, has for core business the distribution of feature films in Japan. EuropaCorp also has for ambition to develop its audiovisual activity. The EuropaCorp TV project intends to create a TV channel centered on cinema on the Mobile TV which main goal will be the programming of programs dedicated to the cinema and the broadcast of feature films. [edit] Success[edit] Awards and NominationsIn 2009, the movie In the Beginning directed by Xavier Giannoli was competing in the Cannes Film Festival’s Official Selection. I Love You Phillip Morris, in which Glenn Ficarra and John Requa direct Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor was in the competition too, for the Camera d’Or during the Director’s Fortnight. This was not the first appearance of EuropaCorp at the Cannes Festival. In 2005, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, by Tommy Lee Jones was nominated for the Golden Palm, and Tommy Lee Jones won the Best Actor Award while Guillermo Arriaga won the Best Script Award. The movie was given a place of honor at the Satellite Awards 2005 and the Independent Spirit Awards 2005. It also won the “Grand Prix” at the Flanders International Film Festival and the Bronze Wrangler at the Western Heritage Awards. Several other EuropaCorp productions left their mark on diverse film festivals. To name some of them: The movie Taken, directed by Pierre Morel, was nominated in 2009 at the Teen Choice Award for the Action Adventure Movie Award. The movie and its soundtrack composer Nathaniel Mechaly in particular, won the BMI Film Music Award. Human Zoo, directed by Rie Rasmussen was competing at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival in the Panorama section, as well as at the Copenhagen Festival and at the Rio de Janeiro Festival. Hitman, directed by Xavier Gens won the Golden Trailer Award 2008 for Best Motion/Title Graphics. Arthur and the Invisibles, directed by Luc Besson won the NRJ Ciné Award 2007 for Best Dubbing; the film was also nominated at the Young Artist Award for Best International Family Feature Film and Best Performance in an International Feature Film - Leading Young Actor with Freddie Highmore. The Chinese Botanist's Daughters, directed by Dai Sijie won in 2006 the Best Artistic Contribution and People’s Choice Awards at the Montreal World Film Festival, and was nominated for the « Grand Prix des Amériques ». The film also won the Best Canadian Film or Video Award at the Toronto Inside Out Lesbian and gay Film and Video Festival in 2007. [edit] International DimensionEuropaCorp produced among the most successful French films in terms of worldwide box office, with, in particular, Taken 224M$, Arthur and the Invisibles 107M$, The Transporter 3 106M$, Hitman 100M$, The Transporter 2 85M$. The biggest French export success of all time is The Fifth Element, directed by Luc Besson in 1997, with a worldwide box office of 264M$. EuropaCorp has developed a significant expertise in the production of English-language films with a strong potential of international success: 1/3 of the films produced by the Group are shot in English. The resort to international talents is an integral part of EuropaCorp’s strategy; Liam Neeson, John Travolta, Jim Carrey, Ewan McGregor, Penelope Cruz et Madonna are among the talents that already took part into one of EuropaCorp’s productions. [edit] "Cité du Cinéma", French movie studiosEuropaCorp will join the « Cité du Cinéma » due to open in 2012. This movie studio, located in Saint-Denis, just a few minutes away from Paris, will comprise a total of 9 film sets, each of which is between 600 and 2,200 m2 (6,458 sf and 23,681 sf), as well as more than 51,000 m2 (548,960 sf) of offices and workshops, making the “Cité du Cinéma” the biggest movie studio in Europe. The cinema school « Ecole Nationale Supérieure Louis Lumière » will also become established in the area. The « Cité du Cinéma » intends to foster French but also international productions. EuropaCorp has signed a lease with the Nef Lumière, owner of the tertiary complex, to have at its disposal the space to assemble in one place the Europacorp permanent staff and the film crews, with extra space for any potential new activities. This tertiary complex is financed by both the Caisse des Dépôt and Vinci. On the other hand, EuropaCorp is a minority shareholder in the company operating the studios, joining Euro Media Group, Quinta Communications and Frontline. The Euro Media Group, which owns several film studios throughout Europe, will contribute its expertise in the management and day-to-day running of these Studios of Paris. This tool for the film industry will enable EuropaCorp to rationalize and improve its production process and have at its disposal studios with a technical level on par with the major European film studios.
