Club Deportivo Estudiantes Tecos is a Mexican professional football club associated with the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara AC. It currently plays in the Primera División, with home games in the Estadio 3 de Marzo (March 3 Stadium, for the University's 1935 date of founding). The 30,015-seat facility is located in Zapopan, a municipality within the Guadalajara, Jalisco conurbation. Previously named Tecos UAG, Estudiantes is one of three top-flight teams in Guadalajara. They have won the national championship once. The club was runner up in the Mexican League's Clausura 2005, after losing to Club América in the second game, 6-3.
[edit] HistoryEstudiantes Tecos was founded in 1935 under the name Tecos UAG. They played amateur football until 1971 when they joined Federacion Mexicana de Futbol. They gained promotion to Liga de Ascenso, and two years later in 1974-75 season, they were promoted to Primera División Mexicana. In First Division they didn't have much chances, so they had difficulties, until the 80's, where they could enter the Liguilla, (tournament for the title), but where soon defeated.[2] They arrived to the final in 1993-1994 season where they faced Club Santos Laguna. The match was very hard for Tecos, but finally they beat the match, and they held the title. [edit] 2009 Renovation ProjectIn 2009 a renovation plan was released, where a name and logo change for the club were supposed. This plan was supported by Mexican chairman José Antonio Leaño and family (which are the owners of the team), and Juan José Frangie chairman which worked before with C.D. Guadalajara. In May 25, 2009 the project was officially released. The first change was the name; Tecos de la UAG (Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara) turned into Estudiantes Tecos. The new colors are now wine and yellow, which before were white with red. The new uniform and project are being used since Clausura 2009. [edit] StadiumEstudiantes Tecos plays home football matches at Estadio 3 de Marzo which is located in Zapopan,Jalisco. It has a capacity of 30,015 and was constructed inside the campus of the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara. In 1999, Estadio Tres de Marzo underwent its last major renovation which included improvements such as a new pitch and drainage system. The stadium earns its name for the founding date of the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara, On March 3, 1935. [edit] Honours
