Emmanuel "Manny" Allen Burriss (born January 17, 1985 in Washington, D.C.) is a Major League Baseball second baseman for the San Francisco Giants. He is a switch-hitter who throws right-handed and has played both second base and shortstop. In the beginning of his rookie season, in 2008, he wore number 16, but he has since switched to number 7. Burriss attended Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington, D.C., and St. Ann's Academy in middle school. At Wilson, he played basketball as well as baseball. Burriss is the first Major League Baseball player to graduate from the Washington, D.C. public school system since 1981. Burriss also played in the Cape Cod Baseball League for the Orleans Cardinals, a summer league for college players. Burriss was rated the Giants' tenth best prospect in the Baseball America Prospect Handbook 2008. Burriss participated in the 2008 Arizona Fall League as a member of the Scottsdale Scorpions. During the Giants' 2009 spring training camp Burriss competed with Kevin Frandsen for the starting second baseman position; Burriss was named the starter on April 1, 2009.[1] Due to his lack of offensive production, on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, he was sent down to AAA Fresno Grizzlies for Matt Downs. On July 5, 2009 Burriss fractured the fifth metatarsal in his left foot rounding second base at Triple-A Fresno. He will be out of action until at least September 2009, maybe longer, and is facing the possibility of having a screw put into his foot.[2] [edit] References[edit] External links
