[edit] Biography

Elisabeth was the eldest daughter of Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor and Anna of Bohemia and Hungary.

On 5 May 1543 she was married to King Sigismund II Augustus of Poland and Lithuania, who was her paternal first cousin. This marriage was meant to strenthen the Polish-Habsburg alliance against the Turks and France.[1] She died young however, without producing an heir and was interred in the Cathedral of Vilnius. Sigismund married twice more, first to Barbara Radziwill (by whom he had no children), and to Elisabeth's sister, Catharine of Austria (his 3rd wife), but never had any (legitimate) children.
