Edward Lloyd (died 1713) ran the Lloyd's Coffee House in London which became a meeting place for merchants & shipowners. "Chambers Biographical Dictionary", 1990 5th ED. Pub Chambers UK (Edinburgh) gives Edward Lloyd's death as 'd.c.1730' adding that he ran a coffee house in Lombard Street, London from 1688 until 1726. The London society of underwriters came to be known (to this day) as Lloyd's, from the habit of their members to meet there.

Lloyd's Coffee House spawned Lloyd's of London, Lloyd's Register, and Lloyd's List. There is no connection with Lloyds Bank.
