The electorate existed from 1871 to 1996, when it was replaced by the new MMP electorate of Epsom.

Past MPs were Joseph Tole 1876-87, Edwin Mitchelson 1887-96, John Bollard 1896-1914, Christopher Parr 1914-26, Rex Mason 1926-28, and Arthur Stallworthy 1928-35. Premier and Attorney-General Frederick Whitaker stood unsucessfully for Eden in 1879.
