[edit] History

The airline was founded on 19 October 1995 in Bassersdorf, Switzerland, with just one airliner, a McDonnell Douglas MD-83.

In 1998, the company decided to re-equip their fleet to Airbus A320 aircraft.

In 1999, the company added long haul Airbus A330-200 planes.

In 2006, by the 10th anniversary of its first flight, the company had grown to 240 full-time employees. It carried more than 720,000 passengers in 2005.[citation needed]

The company's name derives from the Swiss unofficial national flower, the Edelweiss. Edelweiss Air’s motto is Flying the Swiss way, showcasing its focus on dependability, punctuality and friendliness.

In March 2007, Edelweiss Air was wholly owned by Kuoni Travel Ltd and had 190 employees.[2]

Since 1 November 2008, Kuoni Travel Ltd sold the operating rights of the airline to Swiss International Air Lines and in exchange received rights to sell hotel capacities via the Swiss sales network. The airline will be operated independently.[3]

[edit] Awards

In 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004, Edelweiss Air received the golden Travelstar Award for its excellent achievements.[4]
