The East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is the statutory fire and rescue service for the county of East Sussex and city of Brighton and Hove. It is funded by Brighton and Hove City Council, the two borough councils of Eastbourne and Hastings and the district councils of Lewes, Rother and Wealden. East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has 24 fire stations.

[edit] Marlie Farm Fireworks ExplosionOn 3rd December 2006 a major fire started at Festival Fireworks based near Lewes. As a result of the fire a container of fireworks exploded leading to the deaths of two firefighters and injuries to 20 others, mainly police officers and firefighters. Also as a result of the blast a large number of fire appliances were destroyed, these were: Rescue pumps from Herstmonceux, Lewes, Hailsham, Preston Circus, Barcombe, Newhaven, Heathfield, Uckfield. Water tender ladder from Preston Circus, the Aerial Ladder Platform from Preston Circus, the Water Carrier from Uckfield and Incident Command Unit from Lewes. Following the appliance losses the brigade borrowed reserve appliances from West Sussex, Hampshire, Kent and Merseyside to maintain fire cover.
