East Stroudsburg Senior High School South is a public high school located at 279 North Courtland Street in East Stroudsburg, in Monroe County, Pennsylvania. The school's mascot is the cavalier. The school is part of the East Stroudsburg Area School District.
[edit] AdministrationThe principal is Mrs. Lois Palio. Mr. Terry Meehan, Mrs. Dawn Dailey, and Ms. Theresa Benjamin are the assistant principals. [edit] StatisticsThe school's total enrollment is 1,710 students. Overall, the student to teacher ration is 1 teacher to 13 students, as opposed to the state average of 1 to 15. The student body is 68.8% White, 14.7% African American, 14.3% Hispanic or Latino of any race, 2.1% Asian American, and less than 1% Native American. [edit] AcademicsThe PSSA is the state assessment test for Pennsylvania schools. All students in 11th grade are required to take this test. Students at East Stroudsburg High School South scored 70% above proficient in reading (5% above average), 83% in writing (3% below average), and 54% in math (2% above average). The men's 1993-94 basketball team advanced to the District XI AAAA Basketball semi-finals eventual losing to the State Champion Chester High School The men's 1995 football team won the District XI champion beating Stroudsburg High School and then lost to Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School in the state playoffs. The girl's 2006-07 basketball team advanced the PIAA quarterfinal playoffs, but lost to Council Rock North High School. [edit] Turkey Day RivalryEast Stroudsburg High School has always found a firm rivalry with its neighbors Stroudsburg High School. Each year, since 1945, this rivalry is expressed in the Turkey Day Game. The competition has gained the attention of Sports Illustrated. The rivalry is presented in the List of high school football rivalries (less than 100 years old). To date, Stroudsburg holds a 34-26-5 edge over East Stroudsburg South. [edit] RenovationThe school has undergone a 92 million dollar renovation project. The district has added a new 3 story wing. The renovation also included renovation of the existing building and construction of a new gymnasium which includes an indoor soccer field. Construction of the new cafeteria was complete December of last year. The new cafeteria has a college design right down to serving lines and table set up. The stadium has been fitted with a turf field and an all-weather track, as well as improvements to the visitors' team's stands. The necessary renovation effort comes to a loss of local history. To make room for expansion, the district plans to demolish the historic eighteenth century J.S. Bunnell School, just adjacent to the current high school. The bunnell once housed grades 1 through 12 during the first half of the 1900s and latter became a junior high. It was knocked over. The necessary renovation effort comes to a loss of local history. Another building that was torn down was the old District Administration building, which was in the past, North Courtland Elementary School.
