The East London derby is a term used to describe football matches between West Ham United and Millwall (Including Thames Ironworks and Millwall Athletic). They have a long standing rivalry together and both clubs have a long standing history of trouble between fans. There is some evidence that the rivalry began when there was a strike by the predominantly West Ham supporting ship works, whereas the Millwall supporting workers refused to join the strike. Despite the animosity between supporters of both clubs, the two clubs have rarely met as they have played in different divisions for much of their history, unlike the North London derby which has been contested some 200 times. On 25 August 2009, a man was stabbed in an encounter between the two sets of fans, outside the ground, during a League Cup game. Police estimated that the violence involved hundreds of fans, which included three pitch invasions by the West Ham supporters.[1] The Football Association has announced it is to investigate the violence that marred the Carling Cup clash.[2] [edit] Notable Matches
