EastEnders: E20 is a 13-part Internet spin-off from British soap opera EastEnders scheduled to start in January 2010 as part of the show's 25th anniversary celebrations. It was devised in a bid to develop and nurture new talent and target a younger audience. Its writers and principal cast are all newcomers aged between 17 and 22. Episodes of between six and 12 minutes each will be available three times a week via EastEnders' official website and BBC iPlayer immediately after the main show airs on BBC One. It will primarily operate as a standalone series but will also cross-reference storylines of the main soap. The show's title comes from the fictional London postal district of the soap's setting of Walford, a fictional borough in the East End of London.

[edit] Conception

EastEnders: E20 was conceived by executive producer Diederick Santer as part of EastEnders' 25th anniversary celebrations.[1][2] Described as "the naughty little brother or sister to the main show", it was devised in a bid to target younger viewers and to develop and nurture new talent.[1][2][3] It was commissioned by multiplatform commissioning executive Rosie Allimonos, and John Yorke, controller of BBC drama production and new talent, will oversee the show.[2] Simon Nelson, BBC Vision controller of multiplatform and portfolio, said: "Online drama is in its infancy and few have succeeded, [but] this is the next stage in our experimentation."[2] He added that "EastEnders: E20 is an opportunity to develop the BBC's expertise in drama production by matching new young talent from the TV industry with the best creative new media talent. Together they can exploit the creative potential of the web to create new online drama experiences under the umbrella of the EastEnders brand."[3]

The series will feature four new teenage characters who move to Walford,[1] as well as cameos from existing characters from the main show.[1] The characters are described as sixth form students trying to escape from "family problems and crises of their own making".[2] It will primarily operate as a standalone series but will also cross-reference storylines of the main soap.[2] According to the show's executive producer Diederick Santer, the series will also explore the stories of the soap's anonymous bystanders. He said, "There are always other people [in EastEnders] milling round the market and houses that we never go into. There are four or five parallels you could do. It will be nice to see well-known characters through strangers' eyes. Ian Beale may show up and he is just a strange, irritating man. Or they might ask: 'Who is that moody girl in the market?' And it will be Stacey Slater."[2]

[edit] Production

The show will be produced by TV newcomer Deborah Sathe.[2] It has been written by a team of 13 young writers from London aged between 17 and 22 who responded to a writing competition and attended a summer school as part of the BBC's new talent initiative, where they created and wrote the entire series.[1][2][4] Santer is quoted as saying "These talented writers are creating a whole new Walford, infused with their own experiences of London life. A fresh perspective on a British classic, EastEnders: E20 will – I hope – delight new audiences and EastEnders diehards alike."[1] One of the writers is Emer Kenny who will also star in the show as Zsa Zsa Carter.[5]

A remix of the EastEnders theme tune was created for the new series, with members of the public submitting remixes in a competition held on the BBC website.[6] The competition opened on 11 November 2009 and was officially launched on 13 November by Annie Mac on her BBC Radio 1 show.[7] The entries were judged by Sathe, Santer, original theme tune composer Simon May, director Michael Keillor and BBC Radio 1Xtra's DJ Ace and the winner, Carl Darling, was announced on 4 December 2009.[8]

[edit] Broadcasting

Each of the show's 13 episodes are between six and 12 minutes in length. They will be available three times a week via EastEnders' official website and BBC iPlayer immediately after the main show airs on BBC One, starting in January 2010.[1] Extra footage, such as video blogs and behind-the-scenes clips, will also be available online.[4]

[edit] Characters

Casting of the new characters was announced on 25 November 2009.[5] The actors are all newcomers.[7]

  • Leon Small, played by Sam Attwater, is described as "Sexy and effortlessly cool [with] a short fuse and a lack of respect for those in authority."[9] His mother died when he was a child and he was left in charge of his alcoholic father. He also practices boxing.[9]
  • Arthur "Fatboy" Chubb, played by Ricky Norwood , is described as having "invented all manner of personas since he was seven years old – in an attempt to avoid being his real self. His current and most sustained self-creation is brash wheeler-dealer Fatboy."[9]
  • Mercy Olubunmi, played by Bunmi Mojekwu, lives with her grandmother from whom she is keeping a huge secret. She is described as having "always been a good girl, but when her parents head back to Nigeria she feels abandoned."[9]
  • Zsa Zsa Carter, played by Emer Kenny, is the niece of regular character Shirley Carter. She is described as "Beautiful, funky and outspoken. [...] She's very bright, but likes to think she doesn't need help from anyone."[9]

Leon, Fatboy and Zsa Zsa will also appear in the main show in January 2010.[5]
