ETV (Ethiopian Television) is an Ethiopian government-owned television channel. It's the only one in Ethiopia due government ban of private media. Its programming includes news, sport, music and other entertainment. It airs in three Ethiopian languages -- Amharic, Oromigna and Tigrinya -- as well as English.[1]

ETV has entertainment programs like the Ethiopian Idol, which has similar content like that of American Idol with some additions in dancing competitions. In recent years ETV transmits few matches per week from some Europe Leagues (2007 Spanish La Liga, 2008 English Premier League) plus some international matches. ETV transmits its programmes on 4 satellite stations.

[edit] History

Ethiopian Television was established in 1964 with assistance from the British firm, Thomson. It was created to highlight the Organization of African Unity (OAU) meeting that took place in Addis Ababa that same year. Color television broadcast began in 1982 in commemoration of the founding of Workers' Party of Ethiopia (WPE).[2] The current structure and goals of ETV were established 1987 with Proclamation 114/87.[1]

[edit] Channels

ETV has two regular channels broadcasting to Ethiopia:

  • ETV1 - The main channel with 24 hours coverage, with content on culture, politic, documentaries, economy and movies.
  • ETV2 - A channel mostly for Addis Ababa TV's service, (the capital's TV Station) plus English, French and Arabic language programming.
