EFQM or European Foundation for Quality Management is a non-profit membership foundation that seeks to support organisations and their senior leaders in their need to implement strategies. Today, EFQM's network encompasses well over 600 organisations. These enterprises work together to improve their capabilities in understanding and implementing what delivers higher performance. EFQM's key belief lies in learning through exchange.

EFQM is a globally-recognised brand. Thousands of organisations across the world use the principles of EFQM to guide their business strategy and operations in alignment with their mission and goals.

[edit] EFQM History

In the 1950’s Quality Assurance was gaining ground in Europe. It was a well-developed discipline, practised by many companies in a variety of formats. However, it was believed that an actual European focus on Total Quality Management (TQM), in which the best ideas from around the world could be brought together, was missing. For that reason, 14 CEOs of prominent European businesses created the European Foundation for Quality Management, later referred to as EFQM. On October 19, 1989, the terms of reference of EFQM were established. Mr. Cornelius van der Klugt, then CEO of Philips, was confirmed as the first President of the EFQM.

Below, an overview of all the business leaders and companies that formed EFQM:

Company Representative Business Leader
Robert Bosch GmbH Mr. K. Eckert
British Telecommunications plc Mr. I.D.T. Vallance
Bull SA Mr. F. Lorentz
Ciba-Geigy AG Mr. H. Lippuner
Dassault Aviation Mr. S. Dassault
AB Electrolux Mr. A. Scharp
Fiat Auto SpA Mr. U. Agnelli
KLM Mr. J.F.A. de Soet

Today, over 700 organisations comprise the EFQM Network, through which, over 20 000 individuals are closely linked to EFQM’s activities.

[edit] Knowledge

Excellence is not a theory; it relates to the tangible achievements of an organisation in what it does, how it does it, the results it gets and the confidence that these results will be sustained in the future.

The EFQM Excellence Model embeds these principles of Excellence in a framework that helps organisations assess their capabilities and strengths in order to achieve their particular goals. The model was launched in 1991 and is based on the Fundamental Concepts of Excellence.

Today, the EFQM Excellence Model is one of the most widely used organisational, non-prescriptive management framework in Europe, used by at least 30,000 organisations in more than 25 European countries and, increasingly, outside Europe.

Next to the development of the Excellence Model, EFQM has also written books, such as "Above the Clouds".

[edit] Activities

To help organisations to continually improve and achieve higher levels of performance, EFQM assesses an organisation's performance, provides networking and mutual learning experiences, offers education, recognises achievements and supports the implementation of best in class tools and practices.

All of this is achieved through the use and application of the EFQM Excellence Mdoel and its associated Fundamental Concepts and RADAR logic.

[edit] Networking -- EFQM Shares What Works

Through networking opportunities, EFQm stimulates learning from one and another. There exist a number of ways in which you can network with EFQM:

1. If you are passionate about business and process excellence, you can join LinkedIn EFQM Group. This group consists of assessors, candidates and independent consultants.

2. The EFQM Forum is a once-a-year prestigious event in which over 400 business leaders congregate to learn, interact and network. This year's theme was: "The Power of a Connected World" and we learned from speakers such as Dr. James Bellini, Martijn Aslander, Google, Microsoft and BMW.

3. The Learning Edge is a free event for members only, including key note speakers, workshops, etc.

4. Communities of Practice are free events for members only. EFQM Communities of Practice (‘CoP’s) are self-managed networks - groups of organisations which share the same professional interest in a specific topic. Each ‘CoP’ provides practitioners with an international forum for peer based networking, discussion and learning. EFQM facilitates these exchanges, selects appropriate sites to visit from among the members of the group and structures discussion around common practices and potential for improvement

5. EFQM Excellence Assessors, i.e. individuals trained by EFQM on the EFQM Excellence Model 2010 inside, can network and share thoughts, ideas and best practices through this group on LinkedIn: Excellence Assessor
