In 1851, when the directors of the London and North Western Railway were planning the branch line from Rugby to Leamington Spa their primary aim was to connect Leamington Spa to their main line at Rugby as directly as possible, no doubt in the hope of enticing some business away from the Great Western Railway’s new route from London (Paddington) to Birmingham (Snow Hill) via Leamington Spa.

Consequently little attention was paid to the rural communities between the two towns. Originally there were only two intermediate stations, at Birdingbury and Marton, both being some distance from the villages they purported to serve. Despite Dunchurch's substantial population of 6,061 at that time [1], it was felt that the village’s closeness to the major junction at Rugby, less than 4 miles to the North, and the branch line barely coming within 2 miles of Dunchurch, would result in little traffic being generated from the local area.

The line from Rugby to Leamington Spa (Milverton) opened on 1 March 1851, but Dunchurch had to wait more than 20 years before the L.N.W.R. were persuaded to open a station at the point where the line crossed beneath the A45 trunk road, some 1¾ miles west of the village.

Thereafter Dunchurch received the same service as the other intermediate stations. Bradshaw's July 1922 timetable shows 10 trains a day to Rugby and 9 trains to Leamington Spa. The service was unchanged in the timetable of July 1938.

The branch was closed to passengers on 15 June 1959, and the goods service ended on 2 November 1964.
