Drayson Bowman (born March 8, 1989) is an American ice hockey player. He currently plays for the Albany River Rats of the American Hockey League (AHL) and is a prospect for the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League (NHL).
[edit] Early lifeBorn in Grand Rapids, Michigan Bowman and his family moved to Littleton, Colorado, where he began playing hockey. In 2003, he and his family moved to Vancouver, British Columbia to better his opportunities in hockey.[1] He attended Vancouver Christian School while playing bantam for the North Vancouver Winter Hawks before joining his major junior team, the Spokane Chiefs, in 2004–05.[2] Bowman's younger brother, Collin, is currently a defenseman for the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League.[1] [edit] Playing careerBowman was drafted eighth overall by the Spokane Chiefs in the 2004 WHL Bantam Draft.[1] He debuted with the Chiefs the following season in 2004–05, appearing in 4 games. After a 43-point season in 2006–07, Bowman was drafted 72nd overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes. Upon being drafted, Bowman returned to the Chiefs and recorded 82 points in 66 games, first in team scoring. His 42 goals was fourth in the league. As the Chiefs finished second overall in the regular season, Bowman added 20 more points in 21 playoff games as the Chiefs captured the WHL title. The league championship earned the Chiefs a birth in the 2008 Memorial Cup and they would go undefeated, earning the CHL title 4-1 over the Kitchener Rangers in the final. Bowman scored a goal in every game of the tournament to lead all players in goal-scoring and was named to the Memorial Cup All-Star Team. After impressing in the Memorial Cup, the Hurricanes signed him to a 3-year, $2.06 million contract on July 31, 2008.[3] Playing in his third season with the Chiefs in 2008–09, Drayson was named an alternate captain to Justin McCrae along with Seth Compton and Jared Spurgeon.[4] He was named WHL and CHL Player of the Week after recording 12 points in 3 games for the week ending February 1, 2009.[5][6] The next month, he earned his second WHL and CHL Player of the Week distinction with an 8-point effort in 2 games for the week ending March 15, 2009.[7][8] He finished the season with 47 goals, fourth in the league,[9] and 83 points and was named to the WHL West Second All-Star Team along with teammate Dustin Tokarski.[10] Bowman and the Chiefs were not, however, able to defend their WHL or CHL title as they were eliminated in seven games of the second round of the WHL playoffs by the Vancouver Giants. Upon the completion of Bowman's third WHL season, he was called up by the Hurricanes to travel and practice with the team during their 2009 playoff run.[11] The following season, he was assigned to the Hurricanes' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Albany River Rats.[12] He scored his first professional goal in his AHL debut with Albany on October 3, 2009, in a 6–3 loss to the Manchester Monarchs.[13] [edit] International playBowman was named to the United States' under-20 team for the 2009 World Junior Championships in Ottawa.
