The Dr. M.G.R. University is a university with its main campus in the city of Chennai in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, and a second campus in Arni. It was founded by A.C. Shanmugam under the Kannamal Educational Trust. Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College and Thai Mooga Ambagai Dental College were established in 1987 and 1991 respectively. These two colleges were then merged into a single institution, the Dr. M.G.R. University, by the Ministry of Human Resource Development and the University Grants Commission.
[edit] InfrastructureThe institute, after it became a university, improved its infrastructure by constructing a series of new buildings: the Ramunujam Block, A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Block, Mother Theresa Block, New Block, Ganesh Block and the hostel at the Kuvam river between Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College and Thaimoogambagai Dental College. A second campus was also created at Arni, increasing the teaching faculty's strength [1] [edit] ControversyIn 2005 the government of Tamil Nadu demolished the Ganesh Block [2], as it was built in a public property without planning permission. The hostel in Kuvam was also demolished[3], and the students were sent home. The students eventually were able to finish their courses on a shift basis, like part-time engineering students. In February 2006, the AICTE issued notice to all accredited universities that their courses would not be recognised without prior approval from AICTE[4]. The High Court finally delivered a clear verdict that accredited universities and university-level institutions don't require AICTE recognition. Since it is UGC recognised. AICTE notifications ceased and the student community was freed from the problem, for which their campaigning on this issue for recogination of their qualifications [5] [edit] RegrowthSubsequently, leadership of the institution was given to A.C.S. Arun Kumar, the son of A.C. Shanmugam, who assembled a teaching faculty. Admission of 30% of students got admission through All India Engineering Entrance Examination.and He encouraged students at research works, and made scholarships for the SC and BC community as per govt norms. After all these difficulties, the A.C.S Medical College and Rajarajeshwari Engineering College were brought into this dr mgr university.
