Dolby 3D (formerly known as Dolby 3D Digital Cinema) is a marketing name for a system from Dolby Laboratories, Inc. to show three-dimensional films in a digital cinema. The primary benefit of the system compared to rivaling systems is that no special silver screen is needed for it to work. This reduces the cost of transforming a traditional theater to digital 3D. The viewer can also tilt his head and still maintain left/right separation.

[edit] Technology

There is a special filter wheel installed inside the projector that is placed before the lamp into the lightpath and removed for normal digital 2D projection. The audience has to wear special passive glasses to experience the 3D effect. These glasses are more expensive than typical polarised glasses and therefore are built for repeated usage. The technology used to create the 3D effect is called "wavelength multiplex visualization" or interference filter technology and is licensed by Dolby from the German based company Infitec GmbH (acronym for Interferenzfiltertechnik).

[edit] Technical details

The visual light spectrum humans can see is composed of the basic colors red, green and blue. The filter wheel has sections that will filter the projector light for different wavelengths for red, green and blue. There is one wavelength for red that only the left eye can see the other wavelength for red is only visible to the right eye. The same works for green and blue. To make sure that the separation works as expected the glasses also have filters according to the different red, green and blue wavelengths different for each eye. Difference in color perception for the left and right eye are corrected within the glasses through additional filters.
