The Djibouti national football team, nicknamed the Riverains de la Mer Rouge (Shoremen of the Red Sea), is the national team of Djibouti. It is controlled by the Fédération Djiboutienne de Football. It did not enter the qualification tournament for the 2006 World Cup. Until its 1-0 defeat of Somalia's national squad in the opening stage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification, the Djibouti national football team had never won a full FIFA sanctioned international.

[edit] History

Football was introduced to Djibouti during the pre-independence era, with the game especially popular among expatriate French soldiers. With the territory at the time referred to as French Somaliland, it participated in the qualifying matches preceding each World Cup from 1930 FIFA World Cup right on down to the 1974 FIFA World Cup. Unfortunately, the team had yet to qualify for the World Cup Finals. After gaining independence in 1977, the Djibouti national football team was invited to and participated in the African Games, but showed poorly.

Djibouti has never played in the African Nations Cup, with the team withdrawing twice from the tournament in 2004 and 2008.

The Djibouti national football team's first appearance at the CECAFA Cup was in Kenya in 1994, where it failed to get a point after losses against Kenya, Somalia and Tanzania in the first round. With a total of eight matches, the team managed two draws.
