Dino Cazares, born in Mexicali, Baja California, is a American musician of Mexican descent and the guitarist for Los Angeles-based industrial metal group Fear Factory. He also plays in the metal bands Divine Heresy and Asesino.

[edit] Biography

Cazares was born in El Centro, California. Cazares met drummer Raymond Herrera and then Cazares formed Fear Factory in 1989 under the name Ulceration. However, it was renamed to their current name Fear Factory in the following year. The band's first album, Soul of a New Machine, was dedicated to Cazares' mother, Natividad, and older brother, Joey. Before joining Fear Factory, Cazares was in the grindcore band Excruciating Terror. The Mexican death/grind side-project Brujeria formed later on with members of Faith No More, Fear Factory, and others.

When Fear Factory split up (temporarily) in 2002, Cazares returned to Brujeria, and released what was supposed to be the first of 13 Demoniaco Brujeria records (one for each member of Brujeria). Asesino (which featured Static-X bassist Tony Campos on bass and vocals, and Raymond Herrera on drums. Fear Factory reformed later that year without Cazares and with bassist Christian Olde Wolbers becoming the new guitarist for the band.

In 2005, Cazares was chosen as a team captain by Roadrunner A&R Monte Conner for the Roadrunner United album which he wrote 4 songs and contributed with other Roadrunner Records artists.

Dino is now busy with his group Divine Heresy which he has signed to Roadrunner Records and Century Media Records. He will be joined by Tim Yeung (All That Remains, Hate Eternal, Nile, Vital Remains) on drums and had included newcomer Tommy Vext on vocals until he was fired from the band in April 2008. Jake Veredika, formerly of the Washington DC band Periphery, has been hired as the singer for their tour with Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquility, and Firewind but the band will decide after this tour if Veredika will be the new permanent singer. ^[3] The band's debut "Bleed The Fifth" is set for release on August 27th (Europe) and August 28th (USA). "Bleed The Fifth" was produced by Dirty Icon and Lucas Banker. The cover art has been developed by Joachim Luetke (Manson, Sopor Aeternus, Dimmu Borgir, Arch Enemy). According to Metal Maniacs, during a recent live show he described Divine Heresy as "similar to Fear Factory" but that it "isn't just as good as Fear Factory".

Dino was recently seen playing "Replica" with Dutch symphonic metal band Epica on September 25th 2008 as ^[4] well as doing a tribute with his most recent band Divine Heresy
On April 7, 2009, Dino and ex-band mate Burton C. Bell announced the reconciliation of their friendship, and the formation of a new project with Byron Stroud (Strapping Young Lad) on bass and drummer Gene Hoglan (Death, Strapping Young Lad). On April 28th, this project was revealed to actually be a new version of Fear Factory, minus founding member Raymond Herrera and long-time member Christian Olde Wolbers. Bell, when asked why Herrera and Wolbers were not included, stated that "Fear Factory's like a business and I'm just reorganizing...We won't talk about [their exclusion]".^[5][6]

[edit] Technique and Style

Cazares is often identified by his fast alternate picking, often timing triplets or sixteenth notes with the bass drum, usually employing a palm mute too. This has led to a large amount of "machine-gun" style riffs in the music of Fear Factory. Cazares did not play any guitar solos in Fear Factory for stylistic reasons, but he can be heard playing them in his other bands.

Cazares' main guitars in Fear Factory were custom-made 7-string Ibanez models with Seymour Duncan Blackouts pickups installed, usually detuned a whole step to allow for even lower registers. His main guitar in Asesino is an Ibanez prototype 8-string guitar (standard tuning with two extra basses: (F#,B,E,A,D,G,B, E) loaded with 2 Seymour Duncan Blackout 8 active pickups. In the early days, his guitar tone derived from a modified Marshall JCM800 head with scooped mids and high treble settings to produce the thrashy, chugging tone which has been so influential to the metal genre.

During his time with Fear Factory, Cazares had also endorsed the Line 6 Flextone amp series,Vetta II HD and POD preamp. He is currently endorsing the Ibanez Toneblaster amps and plays custom-made 8-string RG and Xiphos guitars made by Ibanez. In 2007 Cazares switched from EMG active pickups to Seymour Duncan AHB-1 Blackout active pickups, which he helped design with Duncan.
