[edit] Performing Arts Program

Dillard Center for the Arts (DCA) provides a high level of intensified training in dance, music, theater, and visual arts, as well as a rigorous academic schedule. Students must demonstrate ability and interest in one of the four artistic academic potential. Such programs within the music department were keyboard, voice, band, orchestra and commercial music. The chorus, chorale, gospel choir, jazz band and rock band performs immensely in Broward county and the Fort Lauderdale community. DCA, in partnership with students, parents, staff, and the arts community, offers a full complement of course offerings, as well as performance and competitive opportunities at the local, state, and national levels.

[edit] Emerging Computer Technology

The Dillard ECT Program was the first computer-themed program in the county, originating in 1988. It was nationally recognized by The Wall Street Journal in 1995 and holds the District of Broward County's charter chapter of the American Technology Honor Society. Dillard's on-going partnership with Motorola Plantation has been recognized and honored by the State of Florida, as well as the international FIRST Robotics Competition. To build student's resume power, the close relationships with Motorola, Apple Inc., and other partners afford students many opportunities for internships and work-study programs.

With courses in digital media, computer programming, robotics, and hardware/network support, any students interested in technology benefits greatly from the advanced training available in this program. In addition, Dillard High School offers many advanced placement and honor courses that help ensure admission and scholarships to many to the nation's top universities and colleges. Over $1,000,000 in scholarships were awarded to Dillard ECT students.

[edit] 2008 shooting

In the morning of November 12, 2008, 15-year-old student Teah Wimberly shot classmate Amanda Collette in the main hallway. The school then went under lockdown and Wimberly surrendered to police. Collette was transported to a nearby hospital where she died of her wounds.[3] According to police, Wimberly had wanted a lesbian relationship with Collette, who rejected the idea.(see Gregory Kane`s Dec 7 column in the Washington Examiner, 2009)
