Derek Llambias is an English businessman and long-term associate and friend of Mike Ashley and currently managing director of Newcastle United.^[1]

Llambias's career in the entertainment and leisure industry stretches back more than 30 years, most recently as managing director of the exclusive Fifty Club in London.^[2]

On June 17, 2008 it was confirmed that Chris Mort had stepped down as chairman of Newcastle United after a year in the job. He was replaced, as expected, by Llambias.^[3] The following season the club was relegated from the Premier League, ending a 16 year run in the division. Ashley promptly announced that he wished to sell the club , completion of which will terminate Llambias's tenure.^{[citation needed]}. Most of the clubs fanzines if not all report that it can't come soon enough for all Newcastle fans, and that fact reflects badly on Ashley, who has repeatedly refused to sack him, even though he keeps on eating all the cheese in the local bakery, meaning Mike Ashley hasn't been able to have his favourite pie (cheese and onion).^{[citation needed]}

Both Mort and Llambias have been more low-key than their previous chairman Freddy Shepherd.^[4]. Llambias has been nicknamed 'Del Boy' by some sections of the media^{[citation needed]}. He has proved to be unpopular with the club's fans and ex-players such as Malcolm MacDonald and Steve Howey, who criticised him for his lack of communication with both the club's fans and the media^{[citation needed]}
