The Queensland Government Department of Transport and Main Roads plans, designs, builds and maintains the 34,000km of Queensland state-controlled roads, under the Minister for Local Government and Main Roads. Warren Pitt is the current Minister for Local Government and Main Roads.

The department is one of a handful of government agencies in Queensland with a permanent public museum. Situated in Toowoomba, the Main Roads Heritage Centre, showcases the story and culture of a department with a rich history; how hard work and a pioneering spirit have helped connect Queensland.

The department has a major projects section located at 260 Queen Street. A sample of the departments current activities include;

• upgrade of Bruce Highway
• Eastern Busway
• Gateway Motorway upgrade
• upgrading the sunshine Motorway at Sippy Downs
• Tugun Bypass.

Due to the state's population growth and growing use of the roads for mining in Australia many more projects are being planned and implemented across Queensland.
