The Constitutional Democratic Rally (Arabic: التجمع الدستوري الديمقراطي Al-Tajammu` al-Dustūrī al-Dīmuqrāṭī, French: Rassemblement Constitutionel Démocratique, RCD) is the ruling party in Tunisia. The RCD is the party of president Zine el Abidine Ben Ali and prime minister Mohamed Ghannouchi. In the 1999 elections it received the 91.6% of the vote and 148 out of 182 seats in the Chamber of Deputies of Tunisia. At the last legislative elections, 24 October 2004, the party won 87.7% of the popular vote and 152 out of 189 seats. The same day, its candidate, Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, won 94.5% at the presidential elections and was re-elected president for a new term. It is a member of the Socialist International. Prior to 1988, the RCD had been called the Socialist Destourian Party (PSD), which had been launched in 1964 by the then President Habib Bourguiba as the country's sole legal party. In turn, before 1964 the PSD had been called the Neo Destour. The Neo Destour Party dated back to 1934; it was begun after a split within the original Destour ("Constitution") Party founded in 1920.
