[edit] Maryland

Under Yow, the Maryland athletics department balanced all 14 of its annual budgets, a feat that had not been done in the decade prior to her arrival. She reduced the program's debt from $51 million to $7.6 million. From 2006 to 2008, the school's athletic teams captured seven national championships.[2] During her 15-year tenure, Maryland teams have secured 16 national championships, including the 2002 men's basketball title and the 2008 College Cup in men's soccer.[2][3] Both U.S. News & World Report and Sports Illustrated ranked the Maryland athletics program in the nation's top 20.[2][4]

Pundits have often speculated on an apparently rocky relationship between Yow and Maryland men's basketball head coach Gary Williams. The issue, real or perceived, has polarized part of the Terrapins' fanbase, with some supporting either Yow or Williams.[5] During the 2008–09 basketball season, Yow issued a statement of support for Williams after he and an athletics department assistant traded barbs over the circumstances surrounding a potential recruit.[6][7]

[edit] Personal life

She had two sisters also employed in athletics: Kay Yow, former head coach of the NC State Wolfpack women's basketball team,[8] and Susan Yow, current head coach of the Belmont Abbey Crusaders women's basketball team.[9]
