[edit] Activist work

Swann is the co-founder of the Calgary-based group CANESI (Canadian Network to End Sanctions on Iraq) which later became CANDIL (Canada Democracy and International Law).

In 2002, Swann was fired from his job of medical officer of health, for the Palliser Health Region in Alberta, for speaking out in favour of the Kyoto Accord. After much public controversy, he was offered his job back. He chose to decline the offer and instead spent the next two years focused on his work for the people of Iraq.

His activism also included anti-tobacco work as the Chairperson of the Alberta Campaign for Action on Tobacco (ACAT) and involvement with Scarboro United Church. [1]

[edit] Political career

David Swann (centre foreground) marches in the Pride Calgary Parade on June 8, 2008 to support LGBT rights.

Swann entered electoral politics as a candidate for the Liberals. He was elected to the Alberta Legislature in the Alberta general election on November 22, 2004. Along with Harry B. Chase, and Dave Taylor, Swann is part of a re-emergence of provincial Liberals in Calgary which had been completely held by the Progressive Conservatives. He was named Liberal environment critic in December, 2004. Swann was re-elected in the March 3, 2008 election.

Swann won the 2008 Alberta Liberal leadership election on December 13, 2008, defeating Dave Taylor and Mo Elsalhy.[1]
