[edit] Playing career

[edit] Club

He signed his first professional contract in the United States after briefly attending Martin Methodist College in Pulaski, Tennessee between 1999 and 2001. His first taste of professional football was with Raleigh, N.C. in the United Soccer Leagues system. After a partial season in Raleigh, he moved to the Wilmington Hammerheads, a third division team, where he finished the season with 7 goals.

But problems off the field forced Obua to temporarily abandon his hopes of a professional career. He eventually returned to Uganda and started over again. He was spotted by Kaizer Chiefs and signed for them for 3 years after a standout performance for the national team against South Africa. He went on to become one of the top players in South Africa during a two-year period 2005-2007.[citation needed]

Being out of contract he was available on a free transfer in the summer of 2008. He landed a trial with Premier League club West Ham United,[1] before agreeing a deal with Scottish Premier League club Heart of Midlothian.[2] On 6 August, it was revealed that Obua was granted a work permit and had signed for Hearts.

[edit] Country

In September 2007, he scored a hat-trick for Uganda in an African Cup of Nations qualifier against Niger which was won 3–1.

[edit] Family

Obua is the son of Denis Obua, who played for Uganda in the 1978 African Cup of Nations. His uncle John Akii-Bua became Uganda's first Olympic champion by winning the 400 metre hurdles in the world record time of 47.82 seconds at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich.
