For the Brazilian footballer, see Daniel Alves.
Daniel Miguel Alves Gomes (born 7 August 1983 in Caracas), commonly known as just Danny, is a Venezuelan-born Portuguese footballer who currently plays as an attacking midfielder for Zenit Saint Petersburg in the Russian Premier League. Danny is also a member of the Portuguese national team.
[edit] Club careerBorn into a Portuguese family, Danny moved to the island of Madeira at a young age from Caracas, Venezuela. There he would developed his football skills in the youth teams of Marítimo, making his breakthrough into the first team at the end of the 2001-02 season, scoring five goals in 10 games. Having signed to Portuguese Liga powerhouse Sporting Clube de Portugal for €2.1 million after that sole season, Danny was immediately loaned back to Marítimo, returning in June 2004. On February 2005, he joined Russia's Dynamo Moscow, a club that was signing a large number of Portuguese and Portugal-based players at the time (namely Maniche and Derlei). He would eventually be the one with the most success in Russia, being awarded the best Dynamo player of the 2005 season. On 24 August 2008, Danny was bought by Zenit St. Petersburg for a fee of €30 million, which made him the most expensive player of the Russian League.[1] He made his club debut in the 2008 UEFA Super Cup game against Manchester United, where he scored the winning goal, later being named Man of the Match in a 2-1 final win.[2] As Zenit finished the season in fifth place, Danny contributed with ten league goals, the competition's second-best. On 20 August 2008, Danny made his debut for Portugal in a friendly against Faroe Islands, a 5-0 home win. Previously, he appeared with the nation at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, while also playing regularly with the under-21s. [edit] Club statistics
